Automotive GPS units allow you to input a destination using buttons or onscreen selections, the system will plot out a route, deliver spoken directions, and display each turn as you drive.
Most let you request the shortest, the fastest, or even a toll-free route. A system's database also includes such "points of interest" as restaurants, gas stations, and ATMs.
Although not as easy to use as the best automotive GPS system, which is built-in and costing upwards of $2,000 that are optional with many new cars, portable systems do have advantages: You can easily move the device from car to car. They're generally lightweight--anywhere from a few ounces to a couple of pounds--and will easily fit inside luggage.
